COVID-19 safety rules in Portugal

After the coronavirus lockdown in Portugal has ended we now see the country opening up step by step according to the masterplan made by the Portuguese government. It was announced by several airlines that they will start flying to Portugal again from mid-June while others are starting again in July. It means that Portugal is ready just in time to start receiving summer visitors. In preparation for your visit to Portugal it is good to know what the rules in Portugal are in public areas, such as supermarkets and restaurants, but also when you enter public transport or when doing a property viewing with your real estate agent. What can you expect and what is expected from you?

What are the new general rules against COVID-19 in Portugal?

Just like any other country Portugal also has the basic rules of staying at home when not feeling well, sneezing and coughing should be done into the elbow and social contact has to be avoided. Besides these basic rules there are some additional measures that have been specifically chosen by the Portuguese government to maintain the low number of infections. The country has been appraised all over the world about how well and accurate they dealt at the start of this pandemic and of course, the Portuguese government and its citizens want to do all they can to maintain those low numbers.

What are the rules when visiting Portugal during the summer?

  • Keep a social distance of 2 meters and do not shake hands.
  • Masks are required in all enclosed public spaces, also inside restaurants but clearly have to be taken off to eat or drink. On outdoor terrace spaces, it is not obliged, however, the advice is to have a mask with you if you are requested to wear it, to then wear it.
  • Masks (or visors) are mandatory when using public passenger transport.
  • Restaurants can operate currently on the maximum capacity of 50% and from 1st of June with full capacity but keeping enough space in between tables.
  • On the beaches you are asked to keep 1,5 meter distance to other groups, when booking a sunlounger you can rent it either for the morning or the afternoon, allowing everyone to have access to the beach and before departure to the beach, you are asked to check in the app called, "Info praia app", if the beach of your choice still has capacity left for you to enter. The app is one of the solutions to avoid overcrowded beaches this summer season. The Prime Minister informed that the police are not reinforcing these rules but it is asked from people themselves to adhere to these measures.
  • Everyone is asked to give preference to electronic payment.
  • Avoid touching surfaces or unnecessary objects.
